COLD WAR KIDS + HAIM - THE SATELLITE - 2/20/12

After peeping new tracks for the minimum day event, I was excited to see the COLD WAR KIDS hitting their stride in some new material. From set-opener "Welcome to the Occupation" (first time for me hearing it live, definitely memorable) to the new material presented, it seems that the kids are doing just fine with new guitarist Dann Gallucci. Also, killer Basquiat tattoo. If I was interested in seeing some new songs I'd check the youtube later this evening..

Sister act HAIM opened by going HAM. They've got some musical chops, some T&S attitude, and a family connection. Wish I could have stayed for Milo Green, but I had a date with Eddie Izzard.

THEE SILVER MT. ZION MEMORIAL ORCHESTRA - THE TROUBADOUR - 2/8/12

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra's musical forays sit squarely at the crossroads of free range jazz and punk rock roots. As opposed to the short brutal passages of punk rock, SMZ builds 5-15 minute compositions full of both grit and grace. Melodic valleys and climaxes building the backbone over which guitarist and singer Efrim Menuck admittingly "fumbles" vocals with masterful yet frail textures. This eerie overlay of threatening tension is what qualified these genre spanning noise experiments to be termed somewhat of a spiritual heir to the punk rock ethos. Hints of disestablishment in the lyrics and the occasional violin biting by Jessica Moss doesn't hurt either.

Between songs Efrim answered questions, after saying that while his trips to Los Angeles are always interesting and the weather is wonderful it is a complete mystery to him how one lives there. Song two of the setlist was "There is a light" with an offered explanation "because there is, but it's very dim."

A drunk on the left side of the crowd caught the ire of Efrim after the second song, but provided a buoyant moment after shouting that "I am america," to which Efrim responded that a lot of people were angry with him and that he wasn't as rich as he used to be. The analogy was lost on the young man.

Their was actually quite a bit of tongue in cheek humor in the moments in between songs:

1. Stephen Harpers portrait was upside down because they thought it would make him go away

2. Black Waters Blowed is about Saddam Hussein in skinny jeans and (the other half of the composition) Engine Broke Blues is definitely not

3. Pretending to not be able to hear any questions concerning other festival-playing bands Efrim is involved with, and just asking people to repeat the question until they gave up

My favorite (non-musical) moment came when an audience member asked why SMZ decided to start including vocals in his music to which Efrim divulged that he sat down and looked through the chart-topping hits of all time and that "besides some Lawrence Welk tunes and disco instrumentals every one of the songs I looked at had vocals in it so I decided to give it a shot." I've always thought quick humor was a result of constant awareness and an apt mind. The current tour continues through the 19th.

On a Lupine-themed evening, the Echoplex was packed out to receive CHELSEA WOLFE and WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM at the Echoplex in Los Angeles.

WITTR makes powerful extreme music, rooted in an almost mystical connection with the wild woods of the american north west. They live on a farm, record only in analog, and prefer to tour with their own PA system so they can play illuminated only by firelight.

Before WITTR played Chelsea Wolfe, a haunting soulful performance that breathed atmosphere and presence into her recorded music for me.

Quiet Please, the Cold War Kids have softly alerted the people. The two new songs are "Minimum Day" and "Minimum Mistake" and can be found here. The three stop tour includes three nights each at Doug Fir Lounge, Columbia City Theater, and The Bottom of the Hill, dates and tickets and can be found here. New guitarist Dann Gallucci is a former member of both Modest Mouse and The Murder City Devils, and has worked with the kids in the past.

THE HANDSOME FURS - THE CONSTELLATION ROOM - 1/16/12

You know when one of your favorite music makers decides to up and start some side project that will only squander valuable time, and every show you go to you like what is happening but you really wish they would play songs from the other band? Yeah? THE HANDSOME FURS are definitely not that. Former telemarketers/elevator lovers Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry make electronic pop music with a punch and present it on stage with an intensity usually reserved for more aggressive genres.

Despite the duo writing their last album (SOUND KAPITAL) entirely on keyboard, don't forget that Boeckner can call upon his skills on the guitar as THE HANDSOME FURS hammered through a setlist that included both "What About Us" and "I'm Confused." Dan and Alexei took time to thank the crowd for coming out and bemoaning the local weather in Montreal in comparison to California, a healthy fifty degrees different.

PAPA opened, and are amazing, and I wish I could have seen them for the third time but I didn't quite make it. Once I saw that iTunes gift card in my stocking this christmas I knew what I was buying.

THE HANDSOME FURS

HEYWOOD - THE BOOTLEG - 1/12/12

Thursday night brought HEYWOOD out to The Bootleg. I ordered the FLYING DOG IMPERIAL PORTER at the bar as he and his band set up stage. Having heard only the premise of the album and Whispers from the Fire I had improperly surmised that the performance would be hazy, ambient, and hold some brooding drone, but was happily surprised (as the picture above reveals) that Mr. Ben Heywood will still throw down on the guitar.

I might even say that the majority of the songs presented were more guitar driven. Great, but unexpected.

Cornerstone member of Animal Collective AVEY TARE stopped by eagle rock to release the chillest of waves, including debuting a couple new tracks along with old favorites such as oliver twist and glass bottom boat. The mood was ecstatic: 5 years after the birth of not only a club but a distinct movement in current music, LOW END THEORY was celebrating its birthday.

All the residents were in house, Nocando, D-Styles, and Daddy Kev got things started with Nocando reminding the audience that low end was one of the very few all-ages venues, which the crowd cheered by raising either hands holding cans of pabst or empty ones emblazoned with X's.

Nosaj Thing took to the stage with a rare turntable performance playing a sort of tribute mix to low end residents and frequent performers, ending with Birthday Music by Gaslamp Killer.

Finally, surprise guest mix master mike (fucking unreal) came to the stage. The level of energy was high, at various parts of the night the age of the building was shown by the feeling of the floor shaking to the beat. Though the computer was still present, it was awesome to see the level of turntabalism that mike AKA the serial wax killer continue his reign as the king of the decks.

DJ Nobody got onto the stage to take over, after which daddy kev d-styles and nocando took turns to close out the night.

John Stanier's mile-high cymbal took center-stage as the band waged war with the limits of their instruments, live-looping and improvising everything but the vocals in their eleven song set. Hearing Atlas and Africastle live were highlights for me, seeing as they perfectly capture both the elusive and hypoxic energy and the apex grandeur of the BATTLES compositions."

THE HEAD AND THE HEART + THAO AND THE GET DOWN STAY DOWN - THE MUSIC BOX - 10/13/11

Thursday nights adventure with THE HEAD AND THE HEART and THAO WITH THE GET DOWN STAY DOWN felt like a regular old east sider show. I'm not speaking in terms of quality or attendance as the house was packed and the bands were in top form, but in the camaraderie shown between the two bands by stepping in for a song on each others sets. I'm not saying that east side shows are not attended well, or that the bands are bad, maybe I should just write the bands seemed to get along really well and the music was great, okay?

Thao played an excellent set which included writer-favorite "bag of hammers." Later The Head and the Heart took to the stage with a set that rumbled towards a crescendo that had pianist Kenny Hensley slamming his chair into the ground during the finale.

BLAKE SENNETT + JAKE BELLOWS - SECRET - 10/10/11

It was a beautiful Monday night as a handful of diehard fans trickled into a Fullerton

living room to be serenaded by Blake Sennett (The Elected) and Jake Bellows (Neva

Dinova). This was to be the first of several house-shows spanning the California

coastline that could concurrently redefine the term ‘intimate’.

Leaving their homes in L.A., Blake and Jake hit the road to begin the tour without

so much as a Guitar. The concept is simple; good conversations, good company, good

music, all with a no-strings-no-bullshit approach; oh yeah…and motorcycles. The

singers agreed that it was just something they had both wanted to do, so why not just do

it and see where it goes from there. Blake admitted that riding a motorcycle had been

something rather intimidating to him in the past, but he is recently in a phase of his life

where he wants to conquer the things that might have formerly ‘scared’ him.

A definite sense of anticipation etched itself in the air as the attendees mingled with

each other, donning name tags and sipping drinks. However, nothing felt rushed. The

hosts and guests alike were delightful and the evening carried on for a few hours before

the music even started.

Hostess Mandie, and her friend/guitarist, Ruby set the mood with gorgeous covers

of Cake (end of the movie) and Devendra Banhart ( ? ) as well as a surprisingly good

original tune. The guitar was then passed to Jake Bellows who impressed eager

onlookers with his introspective voice and transparent lyrics. Jake has a musical

demeanor that has the ability to suck in each listener to another world created seemingly

just for them. Memorable moments include the playfully delightful ‘Squirrels’, and ‘Will

The Ladies Bring You Flowers’ which had several fans accompanying under their breath.

After a brief intermission the semi-circle of bodies reconvened and Blake took the

spotlight (candlelight?). “This is scary man” he chuckled and than picked up the guitar

to dust off some old songs that up until last year he had sworn never to play again. His

fans couldn’t keep from joining in on favorites like ‘I’ll be Your Man’, and ‘Not Going

Home’ off 2006’s Sun, Sun, Sun. Blake maintained a warm and vulnerable composure

that invited the audience to communicate with him during his set, with listeners even picking up the

slack when he forgot some of his own lyrics.

In the middle of the set, Blake shared an antidote of the duo’s motorcycle adventures

in which Jake used his bike to shield his friend from a tailgating motorist. Bellows then

came up to lend vocals to the only song the two would perform together (the opening

track, ‘Born To Love You’ from The Elected’s most recent offering, ‘Bury Me In My

Rings’). If it was a preview of what is to come, then fans have a lot to look foreword too.

Blake and Jake go together like you would expect two old friends who grew up listening

to the same music and seem to just ‘get’ each other. Blake closed the night out with a few more songs including a tremendous cover of Tom Petty’s ‘You Got Lucky’. After the last hand had clapped the motorcycle buddies lingered for a while before getting on their bikes and heading into the future. That future may not be all mapped out at this point, but no matter what happens, the moments shared

in that living room will be treasured forever in the minds of the lucky few who were

there.

Warnings aside, someone apparently snuck a video camera into the sold-out-in-one-minute Ryan Adams show last night at the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Adams bantered about black metal, marijuana, and king diamonds christmas decorations during the nearly two and a half hour set inside the packed building.

CULTURE COLLIDE - ECHO PARK - 10/6-9/11

4 days, 70+ bands, 7 venues, and finally a Sunday afternoon block party served to put the perfect exclamation point on Filter Magazines second annual Culture Collide festival. Starting each day with a carefully curated selection of international artists, each punctuated by a headliner such as the Rapture DJ’s, YACHT, CSS, or Buck 65

From the wild flailing of De Staat or Death Letters to the delicate piano of Ximena Sariñana or Carina Round (a spine-tingling happening when the entire crowd gathered in the Methodist church sang the chorus to “Backseat” as Carina soloed over the accidental choir) a lineup this diverse is only possible by digging deep into what the world as a whole has musically to offer.

The Methodist Church also served as an excellent backdrop for Icelandic post-rockers For a Minor Reflection and America’s The Elected. Though the festival was officially sold out before the first band played, there were only a few occasions when capacity became a problem for latecomers. Followers of electronic music were no-doubt enthused by the long awaited appearance of the UK’s DJ Harvey and Norway’s Lindstrøm while more local groups Avi Buffalo and Writer were able to enjoy the home field advantage. Liam Finn’s enthusiasm for music showed through in his raucous and talented performance, while Sparkadia songs that I had long loved took on even more weight when experienced live

Overall the Culture Collide festival is at its core a celebration of the will of the people of the world to come together and share. A monumental undertaking such as this can only be consummated by some sacrifices being made by people that believe a festival such as this is really worth happening. And it is worth it, it really is.

EAGLE ROCK MUSIC FESTIVAL - EAGLE ROCK - 10/1/11

Many many people took to the streets of Eagle Rock for the 13th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival this saturday to partake in the musical machinations of HEALTH, FLYING LOTUS, SHADOW SHADOW SHADE, and many others. Though they didn't book Hanson, I thoroughly enjoyed this five-dollar-donation-suggested (not free) festival. One of my first stops was HEALTH, having missed most of their set at Coachella earlier this year I was determined to catch as much of the madness as possible.

And the following is an all-points bulletin to festival goers. Just because its electronic does not mean it is dub-step. Refer to this music by ITS CORRECT GENRE please and thank you. Oh you are not sure which one it is? Well maybe do some research before comparing nosaj thing to skrillex.
